HTTP Live Streaming (also known as HLS) is a web server based media streaming solution implemented by Apple. Videos are segemented in several small segments of data (2 or 4 seconds long) and served to the visitors via an extended M3U playlist. Using this method even mobile visitors that use mobile data will be able to view videos without buffering. If the video has been encoded to several formats (240p, 360p...1080p) the format suitable for the mobile data rate will be automatically selected.
